Understanding Threats to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA)

Tomorrow · 5:30 PM – 7 PM

Museum of Boulder · Boulder · 14 mi

Today, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) is under an immediate threat from two directions. Earlier this year, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation proposed new rules which would significantly weaken compliance with the NHPA. More recently, a bipartisan bill was introduced in the senate which would fundamentally rewrite the NHPA itself, threatening the historic places that matter to local communities. Join us to hear about the proposed changes, how they will likely affect our communities, and what you can do to help protect the NHPA and cultural resources across the nation. About the presenter: Chrisitan Driver has worked as a cultural resource professional in the Midwest and west since the early 2000s. He has worked in the Boulder area exclusively for the last decade. He is also a member of the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists (CCPA). The Museum of Boulder is hosting this program in partnership with Historic Boulder to provide a welcoming space for informed community dialogue about issues affecting Boulder’s history and historic places, as is in keeping with our mission. This program is free with admission to the Museum of Boulder.

Attendees will also be invited to share feedback, stories, and connections that can help shape the final project. Wycherley, a striking coal miner in Lafayette, Colorado, engaged in a fight with the Diaz men, non-union miners employed at the Capitol mine. During the fight, Wycherley was stabbed and died. Juan Diaz was shot in the stomach. The Diaz men were captured and held in the Lafayette jail which was surrounded by “250 striking miners and a large number of women” when the Boulder County Sheriff Martin P. Capp arrived. A half hour later, the mob had increased to 500 people, and more than half of them were armed. Capp made an eloquent plea to the crowd, and was credited with preventing a lynchin
