Food for Talk is a book club for anyone interested in cooking! Instructions on how to join this community of home cooks and fellow culinary travelers can be found after the description of this month's cookbook. If reading about food, experimenting with new recipes and learning from other cooks sounds fun, sign up and join us on the second Sunday of every month at 3pm! Locations vary. This month: Turtle Island: Foods and Traditions of the Indigenous Peoples of North America by Sean Sherman Please register with Barbara Shatara at bshatara@burlingtonvt.gov About this month's cookbook: Turtle Island by Sean Sherman Growing up on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation, Oglala Lakota chef Sean Sherman understood that his people’s food was rich in flavor, heritage, and connection to the land. It was in the midst of a successful restaurant career mainly cooking European cuisines that he realized the lack of understanding about Native American foodways—a revelation that sent him on a journey to learn more about how Indigenous communities have preserved and evolved their cuisines through the centuries. Now a leading figure in the Indigenous food movement, he shares in Turtle Island the unique and diverse Native foodways of North America through both traditional and modern recipes made with ingredients that have nourished Indigenous peoples physically, spiritually, and culturally for generations. Organized by region, this book delves into the rich culinary landscapes of Turtle Island—as many Indigenous cultures call this continent. Learn to eat with the seasons, consume meat and fish nose-to-tail, focus on plant-forward dishes, and discover how to better feed yourself. Alongside delicious recipes like Smoked Bison Ribeye, Wild-Rice Crusted Walleye Cakes, Charred Rainbow Trout with Grilled Ramps, Sweet Potato Soup with Dried Venison and Chile Oil, Sunflower Seed “Risotto,” and Sweet Corn Pudding with Woodland Berry Sauce (and so much more), you’ll see the inspiring Indigenous food scene through Sean’s eyes. Exemplifying how Native foodways can teach us all to connect with the natural world around us, Turtle Island features rich narrative histories and spotlights the communities producing, gathering, and cooking these foods, including remarkable stories of ingenuity and adaptation that capture the resilience of Indigenous communities. How to Join: It's as easy as 1, 2, 3... 1. Register with Barbara Shatara bshatara@burlingtonvt.gov 2. Pick up a copy of the book from the Library's Main Desk. 3. Read it, make a dish (not required though) and bring it to the discussion at 3 pm. Location: Fletcher Room.

SPLAT, SPLUT, SPLOCK: Making Comics Make Noise 2:30pm - 3:15pm Instructor: Jon Chad One of the greatest effects in comics is its ability to recreate the sensation of noise through sound effects. Sound effects can help strengthen the sense of place in your comic, can help communicate what's going on to the reader, and are also a ton of fun to draw. In this workshop, cartoonist Jon Chad will lead participants in some activities to help make their sound effects as squishy, explode-y, splashy, or zappy as they can possibly be! From Panel to Print: Comics Construction and Distribution 11:30am - 12:30pm Panelists: Christine Tyler Hill, Isabella Rotman, Shay Mirk, Unfolding Connections Moderator: Rachel Bivens How do you get an idea from your head into the eyes of the public? Is social media a useful tool or frustrating necessity? Is there value in the physical form of a comic? But if an imaginary figure is shared broadly enough — if it becomes folklore — it may dwell in our knowledge almost like history, accessible in the culture’s deep knowledge. Laughing with Trauma 2:00pm - 3:00pm Panelists: Gemma Correll, Dave Horowitz, Alex Graudins, Alex Nem Moderator: MK Czerwiec From illness to accident, from breakups to breakdowns, trauma comes in many forms. Artists Dave Horowitz, Gemma Correll, Alex Graudins, Alex Nem, and MK Czerwiec will discuss. Researching Comics: History and Current Events on a Paneled Page 3:15pm - 4:15pm Panelists: Katy Doughty, Camila Kerwin, Caitlin McGurk, Hazel Newlevant Moderator: Marek Bennett How & why do artists work with historical materials? Love, Culture, and History 4:30pm - 5:30pm Panelists: Sanika Phawde, Stephanie Stalvey, Tillie Walden Moderator: Holly Painter Love, weddings, and romance may be tales as old as time, but a couple’s historical and cultural context will undoubtedly shape their joined story. What unique challenges will be placed on the characters in these three distinctly romantic tales based on when and where they were set? https://www.nonfictioncomicsfest.org/ Volunteer for Non-Fiction Comic Festival: https://fletcherfree.libcal.com/event/15613626 Location: Pickering Room, Main Library.

In FFL's newest book club, discuss how these fictional stories and characters come to life (or don't) over snacks and coffee. Register below or contact, Barbara Shatara at bshatara@burlingtonvt.gov About This Month's Book: The Wilderness by Angela Flournoy An era-defining novel about five Black women over the course of their twenty-year friendship, as they move through the dizzying and sometimes precarious period between young adulthood and midlife—in the much-anticipated second book from National Book Award finalist Angela Flournoy. Desiree, January, Monique, and Nakia are in their early twenties and at the beginning. Of their careers, of marriage, of motherhood, and of big-city lives in New York and Los Angeles. Together, they are finding their way through the wilderness, that period of life when the reality of contemporary adulthood—overwhelming, mysterious, and full of freedom and consequences—swoops in and stays. Desiree is estranged from her sister Danielle, and the two nurse bitter family wounds in different ways. January’s got a relationship with a “good” man she feels ambivalent about, even after her surprise pregnancy. Monique, a librarian and aspiring blogger, finds unexpected online fame after calling out the university where she works for its plans to whitewash fraught history. And Nakia is trying to get her restaurant off the ground, without relying on the largesse of her upper middle-class family who wonder aloud if she should be doing something better with her life. As these friends move from the late 2000’s into the late 2020’s, from young adults to grown women, they must figure out what they mean to one another—amid political upheaval, economic and environmental instability, and the increasing volatility of modern American life. The Wilderness is Angela Flournoy’s masterful and kaleidoscopic follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut The Turner House. A generational talent, she captures with disarming wit and electric language how the most profound connections over a lifetime can lie in the tangled, uncertain thicket of friendship. Limited copies of the book are available for checkout at the Main Desk. Location: Pickering Room, Main Library.

About This Month's Book: On a dim winter afternoon, a young Irish immigrant opens the gas taps in his Brooklyn tenement. He is determined to prove―to the subway bosses who have recently fired him, to his pregnant wife―“that the hours of his life belong to himself alone.” In the aftermath of the fire that follows, Sister St. Savior, an aging nun appears, unbidden, to direct the way forward for his widow and his unborn child. We begin deep inside Catholic Brooklyn, in the early part of the twentieth century. Decorum, superstition, and shame collude to erase the man’s brief existence. Yet his suicide, although never spoken of, reverberates through many lives and over the decades testing the limits and the demands of love and sacrifice, of forgiveness and forgetfulness, even through multiple generations. The characters we meet, from Sally, the unborn baby at the beginning of the novel, who becomes the center of the story to the nuns whose personalities we come to know and love to the neighborhood families with whose lives they are entwined, are all rendered with extraordinary sympathy and McDermott’s trademark lucidity and intelligence. Alice McDermott’s The Ninth Hour is a crowning achievement by one of the premiere writers at work in America today. Limited copies of the book are available for checkout at the Main Desk. Location: Main Library.

Join us for an insightful evening with Dr. Lindsay Owens, author of Gouged: The End of A Fair Price – And What That Means for Your Wallet. Local author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Garrett Graff will join Dr. Owens in conversation. Everywhere you turn, Americans are getting ripped off: Online ticket sellers hide behind exorbitant extra fees. Landlords use software to band together and organize artificial rent hikes. Surveillance pricing, algorithmic price fixing, and other high-tech forms of price gouging are the latest frontiers in corporate profiteering, and they’re distorting markets and undermining American households’ financial security. Building on the novel research and analysis in Dr. Lindsay Owens’ new book Gouged: The End of A Fair Price – And What That Means for Your Wallet, this conversation explores the modern landscape of predatory pricing and corporate profit-seeking. Dr Owens will unpack how unprecedented corporate consolidation combined with algorithms that test, personalize, and coordinate prices at a scale unimaginable a decade ago have given companies incredible power and transformed pricing into a highly engineered science. As a result, the old pricing rulebook is gone. In its place, there’s a new credo: The best price is the one you personally are willing to pay. Owens is President and CEO of Groundwork Collaborative, a leading economic think tank and corporate watchdog. Phoenix Books will have copies of Gouged available for purchase and signing by Dr. Owens. Please register below. Location: Main Reading Room , Main Library.
