About

The Lewis & Clark County Historical Society presents John Barrows in his one-man show about Robert S. Kelley, one of Helena’s early and notorious pro-slavery figures. The program is free of charge and begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, at the Lewis & Clark County History Center, 618 Helena Avenue in the Steamboat Block in downtown Helena. Refreshments will be served. Kelley was among the first gold seekers to travel the Bozeman Trail. He arrived at Last Chance Gulch on the heels of the Four Georgians and filed the second mining claim in Helena’s Grizzly Gulch. In 1884, he was appointed U.S. Marshal for the Montana Territory. He also served as superintendent of the Montana Territorial Prison in Deer Lodge. Local audiences may remember Barrows as Dr. Glick, but his portrayal of Kelley is a true showstopper. “John Barrows is a popular living history performer, and he is always an audience favorite,” said Karen Henderson, Executive Director of the Lewis & Clark County Historical Society. “He brings Helena’s past to life in a way that keeps people engaged and talking long after the program ends. We’re thrilled to have him at the History Center.” For more information, contact the Lewis & Clark County Historical Society at 406-422-0546 or www.L-CCHS.org.
